New in 2013: YA Novels We're Waiting For!

2013 is an exciting year for Young Adult (YA) book releases. There are multiple series that are (hopefully) going to give readers closure and others that are going to continue to tease and entice.  Some of YA’s favorite veteran authors are coming out with new books this year, and new authors will take a turn in the spotlight.   Here are just a few of the books I’m looking forward to reading this year:

Just One Day by Gayle Forman (January 8, 2013)

In Just One Day, Allyson meets Willem, a Dutch actor, while on vacation in England. They take a daytrip to Paris, but by morning he’s gone, leaving Allyson to contemplate the intensity of their short-lived connection. Gayle Forman’s books always pack an emotional punch, but they’re so beautifully written that I just can’t resist. Just One Day is currently available to check out at the Ysleta Branch Library.

Everbound by Brodi Ashton (January 22, 2013)

The Everneath series is largely based on the Greek myth of Hades and Persephone. In the first book, Nikki was lured into the Everneath by Cole, one of the Everliving. The Everliving feed Dementor-like on the emotions of humans in order to maintain their immortality. In Everbound, Nikki is still dealing with the consequences of a sacrifice made for her and trying to set things right. Unfortunately this is going to involve spending time with Cole, who is obsessed with the idea of her becoming the new queen of the Everneath. I can’t wait to learn more about the Everneath and see how Nikki is dealing with the impact of everything she experienced in the last book.

The Madness Underneath by Maureen Johnson (February 26, 2013)

The Madness Underneath is the second book in “Queen of Teen” Maureen Johnson’s Shades of London series. In the first novel, Rory was transplanted from her home in the US to attend the Wexford School in London, where a Jack the Ripper copycat was terrorizing the city. Rory got a little too close to the horror, which had life-altering consequences. In The Madness Underneath, Rory returns to Wexford and is, once again, involved in a string of murders. If this novel is anything like the first in the series, The Name of the Star, it’s bound to be a page-turner full of terrifying moments.

Requiem by Lauren Oliver (March 5, 2013)

This is the final installment of Lauren Oliver’s Delirium series. The heroine, Lena, lives in a dystopian world in which love is classified as a disease and forbidden. (The part of the brain that causes feelings of love are actually removed from citizens when they turn a certain age). In Requiem, there is a rebellion growing against the oppressive government. Meanwhile, Lena is learning firsthand that falling in love can sometimes be complicated and painful. Just like the first two books in the series, Requiem is destined to be a heartbreaker.

Isla and the Happily Ever After by Stephanie Perkins (May 7, 2013)

Isla and the Happily Ever After, the long-awaited companion to Anna and the French Kiss and Lola and the Boy Next Door, focuses on Isla and Josh, both students of the School of America in Paris, who made their first appearance in Anna. Isla and Josh are two of my favorite minor characters, and I’m excited that we’re going to get to know them better. I’m also thrilled that Perkins has announced that some of my favorite main characters are returning as well, including dreamy Etienne St. Clair.

The Moon and More by Sarah Dessen (June 4, 2013)

The Moon and More, like many of Dessen’s novels, is a coming of age story with a healthy dose of romance. Emaline is struggling to figure out whether her future lies in an Ivy League education and big city life or back home in Colby with her family. Sarah Dessen’s novels are always good summertime reads, so the timing of this release is perfect. Her characters are always relatable, and the light, hopeful tone of her novels makes for a fun summertime escape.
