Santa Visits YS!

The Jolly St. Nick paid Ysleta Branch Library a visit on December 14, 2013, bringing cheer and good spirits. The kids all enjoyed Santa’s visit as they asserted their good behavior and their Christmas wish list with the joyous, portly, bearded man. There was Christmas caroling and a storytime with City Representative Eddie Holguin as guest story teller. Even the Grinch stopped by for a surprise visit and joined in on the cheerful merriment.  Ho, Ho, Ho Merry Christmas!

Christmas Book Sale At YS!

The Friends of Ysleta Branch Library will be having a special Christmas Book Sale. The sale will be held on December 21, 2013, 10:00am- 5:00pm in the Friendly Owl Bookstore located in the Cafe area of the Ysleta Branch Library. There will be a large varied collection to select from. Don't miss it!

Ysleta Turkey Shoot Chess Tournament

Saturday, November 16, 2013 was the day Ysleta hosted the second chess tournament. Among the 48 entries was a spirit of fierce competition for the winning spot of the Ysleta Turkey Shootout. Young and old alike, participants and spectators gathered for this board game of strategy. Goes like this …  d2 to d4, Bc1 to Bf4, Qe1 to Qc3, Qc3 to Qc7 … Checkmate!

Lower Valley Chess Club Displays Trophy at YS

Lower Valley Chess Club president, Alex Ramirez, presented Ysleta Branch with the trophy won by the El Paso team at the I-10 Showdown last October. This is a splendid trophy that will be showing in our display case for a few weeks. Come by and view this award exhibit and meet with the club on Thursdays @ 4:30.

El Paso Firefighters Visit YS!

On October 8, 2013 the EPFD Firefighters came out to the Ysleta Branch Library and met some of our young patrons and parents. The firefighters and the kids enjoyed storytime and later made paper fire hats for craftime. The firemen talked about fire prevention and safety, afterwards, a tour of the fire engine.  The truck and all the equipment was quite impressive to see. YS wishes to thank the firefighters of the Q17 for their services and for visiting the library.

911 Honored At YS

Ysleta Branch Library commemorated the 12th anniversary of the September 11 attacks on the United States with a display of books and photos. Several books can be found at Ysleta that detail this tragic event including the attacks, the events, damage, casualties, rescue and accounts, the attackers and their motives, aftermath, investigation and response. Visit YS and checkout one of these books.

Hispanic Heritage Month

Hispanic Heritage month officially starts on Sept 15 th , the anniversary of the independence of 5 Latin American countries. On September 18, 2013 Ysleta Branch Library celebrated with a workshop class on how to make Papel Picado, a traditional Mexican folk art. 

Ysleta Open Chess Tournament

Chess is a widely popular strategy board game that requires a great deal of skill and reasoning. The game is played on a checkered game board with 16 pieces. On Thursday, Aug 24, 2013, YS hosted the Ysleta Open Chess Tournament. The tournament participants arrived, registered and started the first round promptly at 10:10am. The 4 Round Swiss format was played in which participants with similar skill meet one on one for each round. There were numerous patrons enjoying the event, chess players and spectators alike. It was a successful turnout; Don't miss the next one!
